Assignment 2 - Bug List

1. Where I live, cellphone signal can ebb and flow which is more of a bug when streaming things rather than texting and calling which works alright.

Why it exists: Lack of infrastructure in the deeper areas of my neighborhood. Citizens are spread out, making it harder to cover more people from the same tower. Best signal is towards the “main” part of my neighborhood.

2. Parking options for the Park and Ride are mainly on the west side of campus. I enjoy it cause it’s close to the gym but I have to go to the middle or the east of campus which requires coordinating with a bus (or multiple buses).

Why it exists: The middle and east parts of campus are where all the schools are located, therefore; UF focused on providing parking for on-campus students and faculty first. Visitors or occasional commuters can deal with the buses if need be.

3. Limited visitor parking on campus. Reitz Union and the hospital are the main spots where visitors can park (I believe).

Why it exists: Again, I imagine it’s cause of UF’s priorities of giving parking options for on-campus students and faculty.

4. Waking up early generally makes me feel nauseous in my stomach; I am unable to eat a decent breakfast until I have been awake for about an hour.

Why it exists: I don’t think it’s waking up early per se, it’s getting jolted awake and having to prepare for the day quickly. If I had the ability to wake up more gradually and not rush as much, I think I wouldn’t feel as nauseous. Also, it could be from a weird position from sleeping.

5. I have a corner/basket full of exercise apparatus and it looks all cluttered.

Why it exists: Different exercise apparatus are used for different exercises. One could do bodyweight exercises (some still require apparatus such as a pullup bar) but those may be too challenging for some, so you stick with having a whole collection of dumbbells and other apparatus to try out.

6. I’m happy there’s a dark chocolate trend in the U.S., but the product still too sweet for me (I’m referring to Hershey’s, Mars, Nestle, and others adopting dark chocolate in their assortment of products). It’s either the dark chocolate is still too sweet, or the dark chocolate is okay but the other ingredients are too sweet.

Why it exists: America’s preference for sweeter things is still prevalent but maybe people like the thought of still having something that’s “a little less sweet and healthier.”

7. No public transportation in my city, gas expenses can add up since you need to drive 20-30 minutes to do anything relevant for errands.

Why it exists: My city is too large for public transportation to be cost-effective.

8. Two out of the three of my favorite radio stations to listen to music have spotty signal. I listen to the same songs whenever I go to work since I have to listen to one radio station 75% of the time. (P.S. I know streaming/internet radio exists, but I don’t have an AUX in my car. Also would rather not use my phone for music or use a Bluetooth speaker.)

Why it exists: My city only has one “Top-40” station, we also get MAGIC 101.3 (shoutout to Gainesville!) and XL106.7 (shoutout to Orlando!) but the distance is too far (50-80 miles) to get consistent signal for those two stations.

9. At work or at home, I need to walk back and forth to refill my water bottle. I drink a lot of water, it gets a little irritating after a while!

Why it exists: I don’t have a water fountain with a water bottle sensor right next to me at my desk. That would be nice! I don’t study in the kitchen where my BRITA filter is.

10. My room looks a bit cluttered with books, papers, calculators, notes, etc. laying around.

Why it exists: I don’t have extra drawers, cabinet space, or shelves on the walls in my room.

11. The doors in my house close with different amounts of force, so some doors get slammed shut by accident, some have more resistance.

Why it exists: Maybe the door hinges aren’t working as well on the doors with little resistance.

12. I’m rarely content with my body temperature, I’m too hot or too cold.

Why it exists: The air-conditioning isn’t turned up as much in my room as in other rooms of the house. Therefore, the temperature in my room isn’t as constant as in other rooms in the house.

13. There’s a bunch of stuff to do on-campus and I like to go to campus when I can. However, keeping tracks of all the different events can be confusing.

Why it exists: There isn’t a site (that I know of) where ALL events are aggregated and where students can simply filter out for what they want. They have to go on Facebook or find out from their departments, classes, clubs, peers, etc.

14. I scan receipts for rebates for multiple applications. I wish I could take one and upload it on each application rather than having to take a new picture for each application.

Why it exists: Possibly due to security or authentication reasons.

15. When studying from a physical textbook for an exam, it’d be nice to make annotations on the book for crossing out answers, but I don’t want to write on it or erase my annotations constantly.

Why it exists: I would like to resell the book. Additionally, writing and making notes would make it harder to read the book later on. Maybe a clear plastic that you could put on top of your textbook to make annotations (e.g. cross out answer choices) that you can erase afterwards would be good for me!

16. I get interrupted frequently when studying or when thinking of something (even when a “do not disturb” sign is taped on my door for studying) and I lose my previous train of thought when they leave.

Why it exists: I live with both of my parents and sometimes they simply don’t see the sign and come in (running on auto-pilot) or what they have to tell me is time-sensitive/important. I shift my focus to them and then I forget what I was previously doing/thinking. I’ve been trying to write short notes of what I was doing before they came in to combat this issue.

17. Where I work, we may have to use different security tags for different merchandise or we run out of one type, we have to resort to using a different one. I wish we always had enough tags and that every piece of merchandise could use the most efficient tag.

Why it exists: One tag requires a loop to affix itself on; they are the quickest to put on but we have the least of them (maybe cause of cost, delivery frequency, etc.). The other kind is a multiple-step process using a pin and a tag and is mainly reserved for clothes. With the amount of clothes we receive at the store, we have several buckets of those pins and tags in the stock room.

18. The key “N” is confusing on my financial calculator because it counts for BOTH a point in time where you want to do a calculation AND also the number of payments you’re working with. If you are/have been in Business Finance FIN3403, you may understand what I am referring to.

Why it exists: Calculator manufacturers didn’t make two separate keys for some reason. Wasted key space on another function that people don’t use as much!

19. I need to erase my whiteboard every time I take an exam on ProctorU and afterwards, I have to re-write all my reminders and to-dos.

Why it exists: Prevents cheating on exams.

20. “Dry-steering” (steering the wheel while the car is not in motion) wears out your tires faster, but it is sometimes necessary.

Why it exists: Steering the wheels while not in motion creates more friction for the tire, wearing them out quicker.

Some bugs came to me easier than others. I would say it took me less than a minute or two to think of each bug though. Typing it all out and putting it on the blog took much more time than thinking of them, that’s for sure!

Have a great day everyone!

  1. A lot of the bugs you mentioned are actually very relatable! Parking can be such a hassle at UF! Also, a disappearing cellphone signal is the worst! Especially if you need directions or really need to reach someone. I have the same experience with waking up early, can't eat a single thing till noon because of the nauseous. And I really feel the same way about the confusion of the on-campus events and activities. It would be useful if they made one proper website with an overview of everything that was happening on campus. Very often, I just missed a nice activity because I just didn't know it was happening than, which is such a shame! I suppose It would even increase student involvement on campus a lot by doing that!

    Have a great day!

  2. Hey Angel, I really liked reading your blog post. Besides being able to relate to many of the bugs you mentioned, I appreciated the fact that you really explored why the issues exist in the first place. These explanations are pretty accurate too. I wish I could relate with your 18th bug, but I’m an econ major, so we don’t delve into business finance (unless we choose too). Overall, great work!

    Kind regards,

    Matthew
